Here’s a summary of the most interesting research I saw this month:
Over 13% of cardiovascular deaths among 55–64-year-olds related to plastic1
The research linked phthalates in plastic to CV deaths, especially in countries with developing plastic industries. The 356,238 deaths amount to 10.473 million YLL (Years of Life Lost) which cost to up to $3.74 trillion depending on what estimate is used.
My comment: Our understanding of the health burden of plastic grows every month, while regulation lags behind in most countries. In the future, people will look back on us and be shocked that we knew so much and did so little.
Human studies have consistently linked GT consumption to improved cognitive function, cardiovascular health, muscle preservation, and metabolic regulation.
My comment: This review provides 181 references organized into 12 sections, and the summary images above are very nice.
Fisetin was shown to inactivate p38 MAPK signaling and therefore inhibit vascular calcification, as shown below:
My comment: Fisetin, found mostly in strawberries but also in smaller amounts in apples, is on a lot of radars as an anti-senescent. It is the subject of an eagerly-awaited ongoing study by Mayo Clinic, and many people already take it in supplement form. It’s great to have this mechanistic evidence to add to the observational data.
A pilot study on topical appplication of OS-01 (the peptide used in OneSkin) reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines in the blood compared to the control group. It also slowed aging according to the GlycanAge biological age calculator:
My comment: Firstly, this research was done by the company that sells the product, so it needs to be viewed with extra skepticism. To be blunt, there is a lot of money to be made by them falsifying and cherrypicking evidence. Having said that, I find it fascinating to see so much research in recent years about topical products like sunscreens affecting the blood, and I would love to see independent research on OS-01 to validate these results.
Erythritol increases oxidative stress and reduces nitric oxide production in brain cells5
An announcement was made that these findings will be presented at the 2025 American Physiology Summit.
My comment: Erythritol is often marketed as a healthy sweetener, and it commonly paired with stevia as the flavours compliment each other.
We don’t have the published research yet so it is hard to know how seriously to take it, but the American Physiological Society are obviously confident enough to do this announcement, and existing research links erythritol to adverse cardiac events like myocardial infarction and stroke6 as well as cancer7, so this evidence is not hard to believe.
Air filters in classrooms reduce sick days by more than 10 per cent8
This is a randomized controlled trial that shows a real-world effect on attendance which might be due to them reducing levels of air pollution, pollen, pathogens, or all three.
My comment: Air quality is very important for health, with small differences in quality adding up over time. Filtration and ventilation are an important part of the equation, as well as reducing pollutants when we can. I went into more detail about air quality and how to improve it in my post The Risks of Paint9.
The majority of people in the US are not meeting the RDA for magnesium, with only 43% of people getting enough.10 Magnesium deficiency is also becoming more common over time11.
This is despite nearly a third of all US adults taking multivitamins, which usually include magnesium.12 One reason they can still be deficient in magnesium is that zinc13, calcium14 and vitamin D15 supplementation can block magnesium absorption.
Magnesium is also lost in sweat, which can cause athletes to be deficient16.
Foods that are high in magnesium like whole grains, green leafy vegetables, and nuts are readily available17, but unfortunately popular pesticides and fertilizers reduce the ability of plants to absorb magnesium from the ground18, meaning that in the last 50 years, as pesticide and fertilizer use has increased, magnesium in diets has decreased.
Mg depletion in the soil results in lower concentrations in plants, therefore altering animal intake and resulting in human Mg deficient intake19.
For these reasons, it’s important for most people to supplement magnesium, and to make sure to take it separately from other minerals like zinc, iron, and calcium. The usual recommendation is to allow at least a 2-hour buffer after taking magnesium.20
Magnesium can also affect absorption of certain pharmaceuticals like antibiotics, and diabetes and thyroid medication. If you take prescription medication it’s essential that you familiarize yourself with any contraindications, which are usually listed in the manual or online.
This can be a great way to evaluate the quality of a multivitamin or protocol; if it provides other minerals along with magnesium in the same tablet or time-frame, it might not be the most well-planned product.
Increased calcium and phosphorus intake also increases magnesium requirements and may worsen or precipitate magnesium deficiency.21
When the ratio of magnesium to calcium and phosphorous is outside of the normal range, it leads to various problems known collectively as disorders of mineral metabolism22.
In the last century, phosphorous and calcium intake have generally increased, thanks to processed meat, soft drinks and cheese, while magnesium has decreased.
[…] the most dramatic change that has occurred since the early 1900s until now regarding phosphate, calcium and magnesium has been a reduction in magnesium intake, going from around 500 mg/day to an average of 250 mg/day. Thus, the calcium:magnesium ratio has increased from approximately 2:1 to 5:1, and the phosphate:magnesium ratio has increased from 1.2:1 to around 7:1.23
Best forms of magnesium
Elemental magnesium is not well absorbed on its own, so it needs to be bound with something else to be worth taking as a supplement. There are a lot of popular forms, with some significant differences between them.
One of the most popular forms is magnesium citrate, which is lovingly known to some as magnesium shitrate, because it is an osmotic laxative that doubles as a treatment for constipation. You might want to avoid that for your regular health stack. So what other options are there?
Here we can see some key differences between forms. As you might be able to guess from the words “glycinate” and “taurate”, they are magnesium bound with glycine and taurine, which are both great for health and longevity on their own. They can also both go into the brain, and have been associated with heart health24
How much should I aim to get?
Each form of magnesium has a certain percentage of elemental magnesium, which is that amount of actual magnesium. Ideally those numbers are written on the container so you know you are getting the actual amount you want. The RDAs are based on the amount of elemental magnesium, not the amount of bonded magnesium.
The NIH recommends that in general, adults get between 310-420mg of elemental magnesium per day25.
It’s important to consider individual needs and risks, and for those who are willing and able to measure their blood magnesium levels, that is a more reliable way to know whether you have too little. For example, when treating deficiency:
The therapy should proceed for more than one month, and then continue with a dose that holds the serum value not lower than 0.9 mmol/L magnesium26.
As we can see, magnesium intake reduces risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and all-cause mortality. The total cardiovascular disease graph is the only one that is less straightforward, with big gaps between the lines showing a lack of confidence, and the authors of the meta-analysis say:
The pooled results suggest that magnesium intake is not significantly associated with CVD27
Conclusion
I think it would be hard to find another single supplement that has such a profound array of effects, and is such a common deficiency.
Making sure you get 310-420mg per day from all sources, while also not getting too much calcium, zinc and phosphorous, will help you stay healthy and live longer.
Spermidine, which is found naturally in wheat germ and legumes (particularly soy), is capable of impeding the oxidation of bad cholesterol (LDL), a crucial step in the development of endothelial dysfunction and atherogenesis.
The researchers also found its antioxidant effects on LDL to be higher than the well-known antioxidant α-KG (Alpha-Ketoglutarate).
My comment: More research is needed to determine whether supplementation in humans is a good idea, but this certainly supports the existing evidence that dietary spermidine is a good thing.
Researchers estimated that between 4% and 14% of the world’s staple crops of wheat, rice and maize is being lost due to microplastics, and the numbers could rise.
They also estimated that microplastic pollution could increase the number of people at risk of starvation from 700 million to 1.1 billion in the next two decades.
My comment: I gave an outline of some major problems caused by microplastics in my article about the risks of paint3, and this adds another important element to that. We need to stop using plastic.
A study of data from 158 countries showed that artificial light at night is a significantly correlated with all forms of cancer, and also the four most common cancers – lung, breast, colorectal, and prostate cancer.
The researchers controlled for population size, electricity consumption in kWh, air pollution, and forested area.
My comment: It can be hard to properly control for variables when using huge and varied data sets like this, so it’s not convincing on its own, but other research has also shown links between light at night and cancer (especially breast cancer) for a long time5678, so this could be a valuable piece of the puzzle. I personally make sure that my light at night is mostly red and amber, and that outdoor light pollution is not visible in my bedroom.
Replacing butter with plant-based oils could lower mortality by 17%9
Data from 221,054 participants was used to show that substituting 10 grams of butter a day (less than a tablespoon) with equivalent calories of plant-based oils could lower cancer deaths and overall mortality by 17%.
My comment: This is a popular political issue at the moment in the USA, so the timing of this study is important.
Reusing deep-fried oil may cause neurological disorders that are inherited by offspring10
To our knowledge we are first to report long-term deep-fried oil supplementation increases neurodegeneration in the first-generation offspring.
My comment: This research on rats is alarming, given how many of us consume takeout food cooked in reheated oil. It will be interesting to see whether a mechanism is discovered in subsequent research, with the authors expressing an interest in exploring the relationship between gut microbiota and the brain.
Paint is so common that it’s easy to not think about, and it’s easy to buy into the inertia of the industry. In this post I’ll explain the health risks of commonly-used paints, and present some alternative choices.
Ingredients and their risks
Lead
Even though lead paint is regulated in a growing number of countries1, it was so common in the past that many houses still have a layer of lead paint under the more modern layers, which pose real health risks when it’s time to re-paint.
Lead paint has a sweet taste, incentivizing children to eat the paint chips, and put objects covered with lead dust in their mouths. Lead exposure causes nervous system damage, stunted growth leading to lower IQ, kidney damage, and delayed development, ultimately resulting in greater violent tendencies.
As the economist Rick Nevin revealed to the Washington Post:
It is stunning how strong the association is […] Sixty-five to ninety percent or more of the substantial variation in violent crime in all these countries was explained by lead.2
It’s important to recognize that lead paint was known to be very harmful for centuries before it started to be banned.
In 1786, Benjamin Franklin wrote about a Massachusetts act prohibiting lead in still-heads and worms in rum, after people developed a “dry bellyache with a loss of the use of their limbs”, and his letter ended with:
[…] the opinion of this mischievous effect from lead is at least above sixty years old; and you will observe with concern how long a useful truth may be known and exist, before it is generally received and practised on.3
It is now 238 years since he wrote that, and the majority of countries still haven’t banned it:
As of 16 January 2024 48% of countries have confirmed that they have legally binding controls on the production, import, sale and use of lead paints.4
What’s worse is that even in countries where lead paint is banned, it is still used in road paint, which is everywhere, especially in densely-populated areas:
Although in many countries, architectural/decorative paints still contain significant concentrations of lead, “industrial” paints generally have lead concentrations that are up to 10 times greater. For example, road marking paints can contain up to 20,000 ppm lead.5
This is a worrying timeline of events, showing how difficult it is to eradicate a substance even hundreds of years after it is known to be incredibly harmful. It can be tempting to imagine that we know better now, but the same thing continues to happen across industries, from cooking to building to farming.
VOCs
VOCs (Volatile Organic Chemicals) are perhaps now in the same position that lead was in in the 1900s; evidence of their harm is well-established, but they are not yet regulated in many countries.
According to the EPA, health effects of VOC exposure may include:
Eye, nose and throat irritation
Headaches, loss of coordination and nausea
Damage to liver, kidney and central nervous system
Some organics can cause cancer in animals, some are suspected or known to cause cancer in humans.6
It’s common when choosing paint in major hardware and paint stores to see products that are labeled as “low-VOC”, which can make that seem like a good choice. However, it is likely that is a form of greenwashing, and is a false-dichotomy. You are being offered two types of products that are known to damage health, but one has less of the poison than the other.
In reality, there are VOC-free paints, and many major paint manufacturers seem happy to pretend they don’t exist. We’ll talk more about alternatives like VOC-free paint soon, but first let’s look at the next problem on the horizon.
Microplastics
If lead is our past, and VOCs are our present, maybe microplastics are our future. Evidence for ill health effects of microplastics and nanoplastics are beginning to pour in.
When we think of microplastics in the ocean, we typically think of sources like plastic bottles, fishing nets, plastic bags, cling film, and polyester/nylon/elastic clothes, but the number 1 source of ocean microplastics is paint.7
That’s particularly bad news because as bad as lead and VOCs are, they may not be anywhere near as wide-spread and hard to remove from the environment as microplastics.8
The health effects of microplastics appear to be many, and the area is still relatively under-researched. It seems every few months a new risk is identified, like this one from Nature:
People who had tiny plastic particles lodged in a key blood vessel were more likely to experience heart attack, stroke or death during a three-year study.9
And this one from Harvard Medical School’s “Microplastics Everywhere” article:
Studies in cell cultures, marine wildlife, and animal models indicate that microplastics can cause oxidative damage, DNA damage, and changes in gene activity, known risks for cancer development.10
Recently, The Guardian’s article “Microplastics are infiltrating brain tissue” had this to say:
The researchers found that 24 of the brain samples, which were collected in early 2024, measured on average about 0.5% plastic by weight.11

Clearly, this is a serious problem for us, so…
What choices do we have?
Prevention
Firstly, the obvious and best choice is prevention. This often isn’t possible because paint is used to protect surfaces, but if you are painting something that doesn’t need it, it’s worth considering.
Healthy paint
If you do need to add paint, there are companies offering paint that is free from lead, VOCs, and plastic/petrochemicals. I hope the big players in the industry catch up, and these attributes become normal, but for now it takes a little extra effort to find them. You’re not likely to find them in stores, so you will need to order samples online.
The best company I found when I looked is Natural Paint co. They disclose all of their ingredients, which is rare, have great performance guarantees, and they ship worldwide. Other companies like Graphenstone, Earthborn and Farrow & Ball look good too, but often they don’t disclose their ingredients, so you have to decide whether to trust them.
Ventilation
Whether you have the ability to choose a healthy paint or not, home ventilation is a great choice.
This topic deserves its own article, but briefly, all of these pollutants like lead, VOCs and microplastics accumulate in indoor air, especially overnight when windows tend to be closed. It’s at those times that particularly unsafe levels of VOCs occur in the home. This is especially true of well-built, modern homes, because they’re more airtight than older homes.13
Dyson analyzed the VOC and particulate matter data via their air purifiers and found that in all countries, the levels of pollutants rose overnight:
When it comes to VOCs, most geographies experienced a u-shaped curve, registering higher VOCs in the evening and early hours of the morning, compared to the middle of the day.14
The use of a ventilation system that exchanges indoor air with outdoor air will smooth that curve overnight by preventing the accumulation of pollutants inside.
The EPA also summarizes that:
Studies have found that levels of several organics average 2 to 5 times higher indoors than outdoors. During and for several hours immediately after certain activities, such as paint stripping, levels may be 1,000 times background outdoor levels.15
There are many different types of ventilation, from low-tech passive ones that are basically filtered windows, to balanced-pressure HRV systems that actively circulate and filter incoming air while reclaiming heat on the way out.16
In terms of health, these are both much better than the kinds that circulate air between the house and the attic/roof cavity, because the roof cavity is often more polluted than the inside or outside of the house.17
Conclusion
We can see a cycle happening with paint ingredients, where they are identified and banned only after they have caused widespread and irreversible damage. It’s reasonable to assume that we are still in the middle of this game of whack-a-mole, meaning that more ingredients we think of as safe will be identified as harmful in the future.
Given that likelihood, the best course of action is to use only paints which:
Disclose all ingredients
Have a small number of ingredients
Have no ingredients that are known to be harmful
Are mostly comprised of ingredients commonly found in livable environments in nature.
Combining that with good ventilation and filtration sets you up to greatly reduce exposure to even ingredients that aren’t yet known to be harmful.
